A Brief History of the Piano

Vienna was at the center of musical culture throughout the 18th and 19th centuries. At the end of the 19th century there were more than 150 piano manufacturers in Vienna, but today, only Bösendorfer remains. Bösendorfers are perhaps the most prestigious pianos in the world today and have a well-respected history dating back to 1828. Recently, Bösendorfer opened a showroom in New York City and has been wowing customers with their luxurious pianos.

Many of the greatest pianists in the world have preferred Bösendorfers for their rich, mellow tone, excellent craftsmanship and their virtual indestructibility. Beethoven, Schubert, Strauss, Brahms and Liszt, are just a few of the great artists that influenced classical music and the development of great pianos. Bösendorfers are highly sought after for many reasons including: their long history as a leading Viennese piano, their elegant style, and the fact that they are very rare, especially in the U.S. where there are thousands of Steinways for every Bösendorfer.  A new Bösendorfer concert grand costs approximately $170,000 (twice the cost of a new Steinway concert grand). For a list of some well-known Bösendorfer owners or more information about the company, visit Bösendorfer.com.

The piano below was recently brought over from Europe in very good original condition and has received a careful and thorough restoration including: a beautiful French polish on the case, replated brass pedals, restringing with the original type lower tensile wire from Europe, including authentic/new iron bass strings (as opposed to the new copper type used today), rebushed keys and a complete action reconditioning.

This careful restoration will produce the warm, clean tones the Viennese pianos are known for and the comfortable light touch which is always a pleasure to play. This piano has a walnut case with inlaid gold, elegant legs, maple underlid and prop rod, a hand-carved music rack and ivory keytops in excellent condition. The piano will not only serve as a beautiful instrument but as a sound investment as well.
