Chickering is the oldest piano company in America, dating back to 1823. For much of the 19th and early 2oth centuries Chickering and Steinway were rivals. Many piano experts will tell you that Chickering pianos were excellent instruments with beautiful bass. Some of the greatest pianists preferred them to Steinways including Franz Liszt, who owned two Chickering grands.
The restoration of this lovely Chickering grand piano will include refinishing the mahogany case inside and out to bring out its beautiful color, refinishing the cast iron frame, new strings (finest Roslau German strings), a new pinblock, tuning pins, and a rebuilt action.
This 6'4" Grand has a beautiful tone and excellent bass. This instrument is unique in that it is nearly a foot wider than most grands, giving it a nice balanced look and allowing the larger soundboard to produce solid power. The ivory keytops are in excellent condition.
